Welcome to Western Canada Spanish & Arts School

I am passionate about the role of Latin American arts and culture in Canada’s cultural mosaic. Over the years I have worked with like-minded and colleagues to create a unique and exciting program in Western Canada. Our program stresses understanding, trust and acceptance for every one of our students, regardless of culture or background. We are highly skilled, experiences educators who want to make a difference in the lives of the students and families we touch. Our program uses dance, art, classroom instruction and wide range of activities to engage our students in the rich cultural diversity that is Latin America. So when students complete a program with us, we hope they will be inspired to use their newfound cultural knowledge and skills in their continuing growth and development. I look forward to meeting you

ENGLISH - Olimpia Alegria
In 1990 Olimpia immigrated to Canada (Windsor, Ontario), where she established a dance/theatre company and a Mexican/ Hispanic cultural association. In 2002, she moved to Vancouver with her young daughter. In 2005, she set up the Spanish & Arts School and the Children’s Artistic Dance Ensemble.
Despite her own limited means as a single parent, Olimpia started the Spanish & Arts School with limited funds from her like minded participants and her own resources, receiving no government or charitable funds. The School allows participating children and their families to engage in what is, for many, their only possible cultural and recreational activity of the week. The School facilitates interaction among program participants and their families, helping them to establish important social ties and networks. New to the country, divorced, unemployed, without money, and facing other difficulties, program participants often face challenges in making connections and gaining acceptance into Canadian society. Most of the participants come from Latin America and wish to maintain their cultural identity. Many also have family members from Canada or other countries who are eager to learn about Latin American culture. The Western Canada Spanish and Arts School provides key opportunities for program participants to mutually share and appreciate their diverse cultures.
